What to Say When Asking Someone on a Date
By The Ask For A Date Team · Published · Updated · 6 min read

Most people don't freeze because they lack courage. They freeze because they don't know the sentence. So here are the sentences.
Every script below has three ingredients: a reason, a plan, and permission to say no.
Casual
- "Want to grab coffee sometime this week?"
- "I'm heading to the food street on Saturday. Come along?"
- "Free Sunday? There's a place I want to try."
Romantic
- "I like you, and I'd like to take you somewhere nice. Are you free this weekend?"
- "You're the best part of my week. Let me plan an evening for you."
- "Dinner, just us, somewhere quiet enough to actually talk?"
Funny
- "I have a reservation and a shortage of interesting company. You in?"
- "Would you like to watch me struggle with chopsticks on Friday?"
- "My weekend plan has one vacancy. No experience required."
Direct
- "I'd like to take you on a date. Would you be up for that?"
- "I'm interested in you. Dinner on Friday?"
- "Say yes or say no — either is fine. Would you go out with me?"
First date with someone new
- "An hour of coffee somewhere public, this weekend — sound good?"
- "Pick a day and a time that suits you and I'll be there."
Long-time crush
When you've known someone a while, name the shift honestly. Vagueness is what makes these asks awkward.
- "I've liked you for a long time and I'd rather say it than keep wondering. Would you like to go out with me?"
- "I value this friendship, so I want to be honest: I'd like to take you on a date. A no won't change anything between us."
Text message versions
- "Hey — would you like to get dinner this week? Completely fine if not."
- "Quick one: coffee on Saturday?"
- "I'd love to take you out. You pick the day."
What to say after their answer
- Yes: "Great — Saturday at seven? I'll send the place."
- Maybe: "Take your time, no rush at all."
- No: "Thanks for telling me. All good — see you around."
In short
Pick the script closest to how you actually talk, adjust three words, and send it. Confidence is mostly just clarity.
